BIT International Semester

1. Introduction

Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is one of the top sciences and technology universities in China which offers a high-level

education for degree and language study. With many strong and prestigious science and technology programs to choose

from, you will receive high quality education. School of Mechanical Engineering (SME), as one of the schools who have the

longest history and the largest scale, is playing a leading role in mechanical engineering in China. 

 

International Semester at BIT will provide you with a truly exceptional experience in China. The semester will offer you the

advanced technology improvement in Mechanical Engineering and Vehicle Engineering which include courses like

Learning-based Intelligent Vehicles, Energy-saving and New Energy Vehicle Technology, Advanced Vehicle Technology,

etc. Every student even gets the opportunity to visit well-known companies in China and take internships there to work

with Chinese counter-parts.

2. Course Description

(1) Learning-based Intelligent Vehicle Technology

In this course, a brief introduction to autonomous vehicles and fundamental self-driving technologies in terms of sensing,

environmental perception, decision making, path planning and motion control will be given. Moreover, some state-of-the-art

technologies of machine learning, reinforcement learning in particular, that can help to make a smart autonomous vehicle will

also be introduced.

(2) Energy-saving and New Energy Vehicle Technology

Through the study of this course, students can be well acquainted with  the big picture of background, advanced technologies

and trends of energy-saving and new energy automotive technology development and master the composition, principle and

technical key of battery electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles with comprehensive understanding on control and energy

management theory. Further, this course aims to help students to establish systemic view on the principle and design method

power battery and its management system, electric drive system, electric auxiliary system, in-vehicle network and inter-vehicle

network, development approach of chassis controller and Electromagnetic Compatibility technologies of energy-saving and

new energy vehicles.

(3) Advanced Technology of Modern Vehicle

This course aims to meet the rapid vehicle and power machinery technology development, expand the academic horizons for

graduate students, and lay a solid foundation for research and work in the future. The topics will introduce a large number of

relevant examples combining research experience,which can greatly stimulate interest and enthusiasm of students in the

scientific research as well as improve their innovative capacity. This course includes three modules: Advanced Vehicle

Technology, Advanced Power Machinery Technology and Technical Seminar.

(4) Fundamentals of Modern Control Theory

Students should understand the basic concepts and analytical design methods of modern control theory, master the state

space analysis method of automatic control system, the mathematical description of the space state of linear system, the

solution of the state space expression of the linear control system, the controllability and observability of the control system,

the stability of the system and the Lyapunov method, and state feedback and state observer. The main purpose of the

course is to master the basic theory and method of modern control theory to analyze and design mechanical system and to

understand the application method in real control process of Mechatronics system in machine and vehicle.

(5) Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

The objective of this text is to extend fundamental thermodynamic theory and analysis method as well as to calculate heat

transfer rates through study of the modes of heat transfer and through development of relations. It is hoped that this course

will provide engineering students with information and background that will enable them to become proficient at establishing

thermodynamic model and calculating thermodynamic cycle efficiency and heat transfer rate.  It also will provide engineering

students with new analytical methods in learning thermal processes. Let the students know the basic principle and main

method to improve energy application efficiency and enhance heat transfer.

(6) Engineering Management

This course provides the knowledge and skills required to manage an efficient and productive engineering organization and

project within the company. After completing this course, the students should master knowledge including engineering

management, quality control and engineering economic. At the same time, the students will have ability to use the

techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering management practice.

(7) Chinese Language

The beauty of Chinese Language is in both its form and context. This course will bring a brief introduction to some commonly

used sentences in daily life such as greetings, shopping, ordering, self-introduction, etc. Besides, the course will pay 

concentrate on training students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills which is of great importance to

explore the profound connotation of Chinese and enjoy its beauty.

(8) Chinese Culture Practice

In the Culture Practice, so many enjoyable programs will be arranged which can help students have a slight acquaintance with

Chinese traditional culture. The teaching pattern combines lectures and cultural practice. Students will practice kungfu to

comprehend the wisdom of fight for peace and understand the beauty of Chinese characters by taking the course of

calligraphy. In addition, learning classic Chinese songs to experience the delicate emotions and getting to know how to make

paper-cut that contains people’s ideals for happiness will also be introduced to students. There is a possibility that the

programs will be rearranged according to the actual situation.

3. Internship Company

Great Wall Motor Company Limited

GWM Company Limited, built in 1984, is a famous global SUV manufacturing enterprise. By the end of 2017, total assets have

realized 110,547 billion RMB.

oversea plants.

“On the first day we went to the Great Wall motors company and it was so big that we did have a little trouble founding the

entrance. When we finally got there, we saw an enormous building with 23 floors. They gave us a brief introduction of the

GWMC plants in China and the brand cars they have (Wey, ORA, Haval and GWMC). Furthermore, on the R&D department,

they showed as some concept models cars, the test benches and other areas such as engine and transmission durability tests.

It was really impressive how big the place was and how much people were working on the R&D department, doing efforts

developing and building the future.”

”We visited the assembly plant where the engine is manufactured, rectified, and assembled to obtain the final product which is

a working engine for the vehicles of Great Wall Motor Company. I was personally astonished by the size and technological plant,

in a totally new and finished SUV of the Wey Company and we experienced a 200km/h ride in a banked curve driven by a road

Second-year in university or above

Full-time registered university students

Engineering academic background including Aerospace, Mechatronics, Mechanical, etc.
